This course is intended to introduce students to notation and basic music theory topics such as intervals, scales, keys and chords, as well as basic rhythm skills. Additionally, we will study the development of Western music, particularly in America. The focus will be on both the vernacular traditions including hymn singing, country music, jazz, blues, big band, rock, etc., as well as the cultivated traditions of various composers from William Billings to John Cage.

We will also explore the interactions among music, science, and technology, including the history and current development of science and technology from the perspective of music.
